Make Your Own Gin in Time for Christmas!

make your own christmas gin

It may be too late to make a Christmas cake, but it’s not too late to make some Christmas flavoured GIN!

Those clever bunnies at The Gin Kin shared a recipe with us for making your own gin.

There’s so much we LOVE about this post!  Firstly, it’s much easier than you think,  secondly, the result can be tailored to suit your taste, think Christmas flavoured gin, and finally, there is still time to make some for Christmas!

Think of your favourite flavour combinations, and get ready to prepare a treat for your friends and family.

Start with a Jar

All you will need is a jar, a filter and your botanicals. Add to this a good quality vodka, they recommend a vodka that you would happily drink on its own. (It’s not a time to scrimp!)

For Christmas think Ginger, Cinnamon, Vanilla, Cloves, Vanilla, Nutmeg, Cranberry, Lemon and Oranges, or mixed berries. Yum!

The recipe they suggest we follow will give you your own gin in 8 easy steps!   We have also posted the recipe below for you to follow.

Basic Gin Recipe

  1. Sterilise 1 litre jar with boiling water and add 70cl vodka.
  2. Add your botanicals – 4og juniper berries, 10g coriander seeds, ½ cinnamon stick , ½ liquorice root, 2 cardamom pods.
  3. Infuse for 24 hours in a cool dark place. Have a taste — the juniper flavour should be developing.
  4. Add 1 piece each of orange and lemon peel with the bitter pith removed
  5. Infuse for 24 hours. Shake once. Don’t over infuse.
  6.  Taste again. If you like it, sieve out the botanicals and strain through a coffee filter.
  7. Develop in the jar for 2 days. Filter again and you should have a lovely amber gin.
  8. To finish, simply add your tonic and garnish. It’s gin o’clock!

To add your Christmas flavours, simply infuse the gin with your chosen Christmas flavours and let them seep for a week, stirring every two days. If using berries, you will need to cook them and let them cool, before adding to the liquid with a sugar syrup.  Let the mixture sit for a week, then sieve before decanting to your bottles. Voila!
