Knit Snuggles The Snowman!

With his fur trimmed hat, gloves and jacket, Snuggles the Snowman is one snappy dresser! This project is best suited to those with a bit of experience as it involves colourwork, but if you’re a fairly new knitter don’t be put off from having a go.

MEASUREMENTS AND SIZES:

Toy measures 27cm high.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Yarn: Sirdar Snuggly DK, shades (A) 303 Cream, (B) 242 Flamenco, (C) 350 Spicy Pink, (D) 321 Pastel Blue, (E) 477 Twinkle Toes, (F) 251 White, one 50g ball of each, (G) Light Brown Fleecy DK, small amount, Dark Brown DK, small amount
  • Needles: 3.5mm
  • Safety toy stuffing
  • Beads: 6mm, black, two
  • Thread: black
  • Sewing needle
  • Tapestry needle

TENSION SQUARE:

  • 24 sts x 30 rows
  • 10cm x 10cm
  • Stocking Stitch
  • 3.5mm needles

ABOUT THE YARN:

Sirdar Snuggly DK is a durable blend of 55% nylon and 45% acrylic that’s perfect for baby knits and toys. It costs £2.89 per 50g (165m) ball from woolwarehouse.co.uk

TO MAKE BODY:

Using 3.5mm needles and yarn A, cast on 12 sts

Row 1 (WS): p

Row 2: (k1, kfb) to end. 18 sts

Row 3 and every WS row: p

Row 4: (k2, kfb) to end. 24 sts

Row 6: (k3, kfb) to end. 30 sts

Row 8: (k4, kfb) to end. 36 sts

Row 10: (k5, kfb) to end. 42 sts

Row 12: (k6, kfb) to end. 48 sts

Row 14: (k7, kfb) to end. 54 sts

Rows 15-31: beg with a p row, work in st st Cut yarn A and join in yarn B

Row 32: k

Row 33 (edge): k

Row 34 (edge): p

Row 35: p

Row 36: (k7, k2tog) three times, (k2tog, k7) three times. 48 sts

Rows 37-39: beg with a p row, work in st st

Row 40: (k6, k2tog) three times, (k2tog, k6) three times. 42 sts

Rows 41-45: beg with a p row, work in st st

Row 46: (k5, k2tog) three times, (k2tog, k5) three times. 36 sts

Rows 47-49: beg with a p row, work in st st

Cast off.

TO MAKE HEAD:

Work as for Body to row 12. 48 sts

Rows 13-29: beg with a p row, work in st st

Row 30: (k6, k2tog) to end. 42 sts

Row 31 and every WS row: p

Row 32: (k5, k2tog) to end. 36 sts

Row 34: (k4, k2tog) to end. 30 sts

Row 36: (k3, k2tog) to end. 24 sts

Row 38: (k2, k2tog) to end. 18 sts

Row 40: (k1, k2tog) to end. 12 sts

Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

TO MAKE JUMPER NECK:

Using 3.5mm needles and yarn B, cast on 30 sts

Beg with a p (WS) row, work seven rows in st st

Cast off.

TO MAKE SLEEVES (MAKE 2):

Using 3.5mm needles and yarn G, cast on 20 sts

Rows 1-4: k

Cut yarn G and join in yarn C

Rows 5-10: beg with a k row, work in st st

Row 11: (k3, k2tog) to end. 16 sts

Rows 12-14: beg with a p row, work in st st

Row 15: (k2, k2tog) to end. 12 sts

Cast off.

TO MAKE GLOVES (MAKE 2):

Using 3.5mm needles and yarn E, cast on 14 sts

Rows 1-5: beg with a p (WS) row, work in st st

Row 6: k6, (kfb) twice, k to end. 16 sts

Row 7: p6, cast off four sts, p to end. 12 sts

Rows 8-9: beg with a k row, work in st st

Row 10: (k2tog) to end. Six sts

Cut yarn, thread through rem sts, pull tight and fasten off

TO MAKE NOSE:

Using 3.5mm needles and yarn C, cast on eight sts

Cut yarn, thread through rem sts, pull tight and fasten off.

TO MAKE HAT:

Using 3.5mm needles and yarn G, cast on 54 sts

Rows 1-4: k

Cut yarn G and join in yarn D

Rows 5-6: beg with a k (RS) row, work in st st

Rows 7-13: work from Chart

Cut yarn B and cont in yarn C only

Rows 14-15: beg with a p row, work in st st

Change to yarn F

Rows 16-18: beg with a p row, work in st st

Change to yarn E

Rows 19-21: beg with a k row, work in st st

Change to yarn D

Rows 22-24: beg with a p row, work in st st

Change to yarn F

Rows 25-27: beg with a k row, work in st st

Change to yarn E

Rows 28-30: beg with a p row, work in st st

Row 37: (p2tog) to end. 27 sts

Cut yarn, thread through rem sts, pull tight and fasten off

TO MAKE UP:

With cast-on yarn end of Body, work a gathering thread along cast-on edge and draw tightly.

Sew seam to the neck edge and stuff. With fastened-off yarn end of Head, sew seam halfway.

With cast-on yarn end, work a gathering thread along cast-on edge and draw tightly. Sew up seam a little further, stuff, and close seam.

Wrap Body with Jumper piece and secure it to Body. Seam Glove, close the hole in Glove, and stuff.

Seam Sleeve, insert Glove in Sleeve and secure Glove to Sleeve at the cuff. Stuff Sleeve and attach it to body. Repeat for the other Sleeve.

Attach eyes and Nose. Embroider mouth with dark brown DK yarn. Seam Hat, stuff Hat lightly, and attach Hat to Head.

With yarn C, make a pom-pom and attach it to the top of Hat.
